In 2016, I was nominated to represent my organisation at the LGPA Australasian Management Challenge in March 2018. Before the actual challenge day, we spent months preparing and working on a pre-challenge task.
About the challenge
According to their website, the LGPA Australasian Management Challenge is a “simulation-based team building, learning and networking program using real local government themes – the types of issues that a senior management team in a council would most likely face.”
“With the aid of an in-house mentor and detailed preparation kit, teams spend time together in the weeks preceding the Management Challenge to develop their skills, get to know each other’s strengths and weaknesses and develop processes and strategies for the Challenge Day. There is a real-world based “Pre-Challenge Task” that encourages teams to work together on a meaningful project prior to the Challenge Day.”
About First Coat Lockyer Mural Project
My team chose the First Coat Lockyer project as the focus of our pre-challenge task.
First Coat Lockyer (2017) saw three large murals painted on walls in Gatton, Queensland over three days. The project outcomes included increasing the sense of “destination” and “place” by creating landmarks for locals and visitors alike and the mural painting attracted visitors to come to town specifically to see the artworks being created.

Challenge Day
The Australasian Management Challenge Day included presentations, one-on-one mock conversations with ‘disgruntled customers’, designing facilities and debates.
